What would you pay for high-end living in Atwater Village? This might surprise you a little bit – almost $1.5 million. For two bedrooms and a pool. However, the property is owned by sculptor Mineo Mizuno, so the property does contain a sizable artists studio. It’s also gated and is on a huge lot, but we doubt Mizuno will be leaving behind any of his beautiful pieces that are pictured in the property gallery (boo).
And it’s kind of located in the coveted part of Atwater Village – where moms and their baby strollers, dogs and their owners, lawn-mowing and nightlife take place. It’s safe to say, you could stumble home after a fun night at 55 Degree Wine. And it’s located just next to the LA River Greenway Trail, which may some day be on the up-and-up some day, which the MLS listing describes as “peace and tranquility.”

As the lunch hour approached today, I was wishing there was a quick place in Atwater Village near the office that would satisfy a very specific craving – a light, fresh, and simple salad of some kind, something that wouldn’t carbo-load me and send me into a 2:00 desk-napping session.
While Hugo’s and other local quick lunch spots will satisfy me for now, we are really looking forward to the opening for a new market in Atwater Village – Bon Vivant Market, taking over the former Adult Jubilee Day Care Center on Glendale Boulevard. Owner Tricia La Bell is a resident of Los Feliz and has spent a lot of time in Atwater over the years, which is why they wanted to open up in this neighborhood.
The new market, hopefully opening this fall, promises to curb my craving for easy, freshly prepared food like soups, paninis, roasts, pasta and organic green salads. Other grab-able items include a savory and sweets counter, pre-packaged light bites, gourmet coffee and other beverages. In addition, there will be a charcuterie and fine cheese station just off the wine and beer bar – that’s right, a wine and beer bar! Everything they’ll carry will have a focus on local and California foods and products, along with a variety of vegan and gluten-free products. The Atwater Village News website says epicurean treats from Dean & DeLuca have already been delivered.
Okay, we might be over-selling it to you but we’re really looking forward to checking this place out when it opens this fall. Tricia told us in an email about the new market:
We are a community driven design indeed. As as a Los Feliz resident and a lover food my goal is to bring to the Atwater, Silverlake, Los Feliz and Glendale area products we all love from near and afar… even childhood memories such as crocks of mac n’ cheese, flaky french toast, strawberry shortcake, delicious summer salads and home baked breads.
Yumm!
Bon Vivant Market won’t be the only one opening up on the block – Atwater Village Farm is a farm-to-table market concept, coming hopefully in October, on the opposite side of the street at the corner of Larga (read about it here). Though they probably won’t be exactly direct competitors, there will be lots of great healthy food shopping options in Atwater Village in the coming months!
Bon Vivant Market will possibly be open daily from 8:00 am until 10:00 pm weekdays, and midnight on the weekends.
They ask that you give them some feedback about what to carry on their new Facebook page.
Tomorrow (Thursday, June 30, 2011) is the first of three Summer Nights on the Boulevard, and the kick-off promises to be good! Today is the last day to submit artwork for the Atwater Art Walk, to be held on Saturday, May 14 along Glendale Blvd.from 5-10 pm.
While this is not the first art walk for Atwater Village, it’s the first annual art walk hosted by this particular group. More from the organizers:
We all have a story. Every one of us. We live in a city of stories. Over 12 million of them. In this year’s first annual Atwater Village Art Walk, we hope for two things. Firstly, we hope to create a space that celebrates our different stories through the art of our eclectic backgrounds. Secondly, it is our deeper hope that the Art Walk doesn’t end with the simple sharing of stories. We hope that through our art we develop new relationships with people different than ourselves. This is where my story and your story intersect to create our story. Please join us as co-authors in making our story in Los Angeles more meaningful.
If you have some artwork to submit (photography, paint and sculpture – no larger than 4ft x 4ft), make sure to submit your artwork by 4:59 pm tonight (Tuesday, May 10)! There’s a $1,000 grand prize (along with other prizes)! Submit your artwork by clicking here.
55 Degree Wine, Revo Café and Kaldi will be hosting the artwork and live music, and food trucks will be located in the 55 Degree Wine parking lot.
See you there!

In short, anything you can’t imagine, you just might. Winner of the 2009 LA Weekly Award for Solo Performance and presented at the 2010 NY Fringe Festival and the 2010 Hollywood Fringe Festival. With Broadway focused on revivals and musicals based on movies and star vehicles, new plays often go by the wayside. If you are an unknown playwright, it’s nearly impossible to be produced.
Not so at The Arena Stage, however, and they’ve been working intensely for a national dialogue that includes all voices – new playwrights, established playwrights, and the people who decide which plays are produced. Arena Stagey began a New Plays Convening yesterday in DC, and Los Angeles participates on Saturday, in our brand new Atwater Village Theatre!
Circle X Theatre Company and Ensemble Studio Theatre-LA, with the partnership of LA Stage Alliance, will host the New Play Los Angeles theater satellite meetup to coincide with the final day of the national convening, entitled Scarcity to Abundance: Capturing the Moment for the New Work Sector, organized by the American Voices New Play Institute at Arena Stage in Washington, DC.
The Los Angeles event will be held Saturday, January 29 from 9:00 am-1:00 pm. Participants will view the pre-recorded round table discussions from the national convening, and discuss the themes within the context of the Los Angeles theater community.
Dennis Baker, a local actor asked by Arena Stage and 2amtheatre to organize the LA meetup, believes this convening can “continue to bring the LA Theater community together in discussion. Any time there is a reason to dialogue and share, I think it is a good thing.”
Baker highlights more ways people can prepare ahead of Saturday morning:
“There are various degrees participants can prepare. The national convening is four days long, with most, if not all, the round table discussions being live streamed through out the four days.” Click here for the full schedule of those discussions.
Watching any of these will bring context to the two round table discussions, and “Endings” event that we will be watching on January 29.
You can also read the institute’s blog by clicking here.
If you want to dig even deeper, the recent book from the Theater Development Fund, Outrageous Fortune: the Life and Times of the New American Play, has the most up-to-date research on the topic.
The national convening will focus on the following: identifying the rich and vital activity that already exists in the new play sector, exploring the gaps and challenges facing the field and strategizing the means of continued and closer collaboration to advance the new work infrastructure moving forward. This convening will build upon the outcomes and initiatives that grew out of last year’s convenings: Defining Diversity, Black Playwrights: the Stories We Tell, and Devised Work.
Circle X Theatre Company and Ensemble Studio Theatre-L is located at the Atwater Village Theater, 3269 Casitas Ave. There is street parking.
