Atwater Village Chamber expresses concerns over post office parking

If you’ve been to the local Griffith Station Post Office to drop off your mail the last few months, you may be in a parking lot battle that rivals any LA area Trader Joe’s.

Yet it wasn’t always like that – the post office now offers only ten parking spots after budget cuts over this summer eliminated its lease of an adjacent parking lot. Those 20 extra parking space, which was up for sale in July, are collecting dead leaves behind a fence, completely unused.

The Atwater Village Chamber of Commerce is fed up with the traffic and safety issues the lack of parking has caused, which during the busy times of the day at the Post Office causes issues on Glendale Boulevard. In a letter to Councilmember Eric Garcetti, the Chamber expresses these concerns:

The parking lot is often in a state of anarchy, with cars stopped in the red zone by the mailboxes and cars piled up on Glendale… sometimes four deep… waiting to make a right into the lot. Adding to the anarchy frustrated postal customers often idle their cars in a live lane on Glendale Blvd to post a letter. In addition, pedestrians are often caught is the crosshairs as they try to cross the Blvd to Revere St.

Something needs to be done now to address this important safety issue. The Chamber urges the immediate posting of a Traffic Enforcement Officer on site to help direct traffic and cite offenders as needed; and for the long term we urge working with the Postal Service to find a long-term solution.

Neighborhood Council to vote on Bon Vivant’s liquor license application

Noticeably absent from the curvy bar inside the new Bon Vivant Market is, well, alcohol! The Glendale Boulevard restaurant has applied for a full liquor license, a topic which the Atwater Village Neighborhood Council will be taking up tomorrow night, Thursday, September 13 at 7:00 pm.

The Neighborhood Council’s Board of Directors will act on an advisory level when it comes to recommending Bon Vivant’s liquor license approval to the city.

Also on the agenda, a presentation from the High Speed Rail Authority, as well as electing committee members such as the Fall Festival and Tree Lighting chairs. The meeting takes place at at Christ’s Church of Griffith Park at 3852 Edenhurst Avenue.

Saturday: Atwater Village Neighborhood Council Candidate Forum

The Atwater Village Neighborhood Council elections take place on Saturday, October 6, 2012, and all of the candidates for the Atwater Village seats have been posted on the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment website.

There are some familiar faces running for these seats, but a Candidate Forum this weekend is the perfect chance to get to know everyone and their platforms. Light refreshments will be served.

The forum takes place on Saturday, September 15 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Christ’s Church of Griffith Park – 3852 Edenhurst Avenue.

Souplantation Pre-Opening Fundraiser in Atwater Village

About a year and a half ago, a Pat & Oscar’s shut its doors for good in that big Costco shopping center along the Los Feliz Boulevard part of Atwater Village. In just a few days, the new Souplantation will open its doors after months of construction.

While the official grand opening will be on Monday, September 17, 2012, the restaurant chain will hold a “Pre Opening Fundraiser” benefiting the Glendale Arts. The all-you-can-eat restaurant will open on Friday, September 14 from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm, and Saturday, September 15 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. With a $5.00 donation you can try out Souplantation, and 100% of the proceeds will go to the organization.

Oddly, these companies keep calling these its “Glendale” location. Pat & Oscars (pictured), thanks Glendale on its closing announcement. And the Souplantation’s Facebook announcement sparked a debate as to whether the location should  be called Glendale versus Atwater Village. The company seems to have conceded to the latter.

Souplantation is located at 2901 Los Feliz Blvd.

 

Two new businesses taking up shop on Glendale Boulevard in Atwater Village

Glendale Boulevard is seeing a surge of new businesses and activity in the past couple of years, what with the opening of Proof Bakery, Bon Vivant Market, Links n Hops, and more. Two more spaces are gearing up to open on the popular main street of Atwater Village, including a Boba cafe and a new music venue.

Boba Loca is taking over A Boutique for Little Tots at the lower end of street at 3121 Glendale Boulevard. The menu includes, of course, Boba, shakes, smoothies, coffee, and “slush coolers” with flavors like Honeydew. Eater LA says it plans on opening up in three months (so November or December).

Just up the street at 3149 Glendale Boulevard is Vox Populi, a “a pop up music venue” by Kaldi Coffee and Jacknife Records & Taps. Vox Populi is Latin for “voice of the people.”

Atwater’s “Villager of the Year” for 2012 announced

Last Wednesday night was not only another fabulous Atwater Village Chamber of Commerce mixer. For the second year in a row, the Atwater Village Chamber of Commerce has honored a distinguished member of the community with the coveted “Villager of the Year” award. This year, the honor went to Shelli-Anne Couch, who helped raise thousands of dollars for Atwater Elementary School at a major local fundraising event this year, as well as raising funds to keep the school’s library open.

The “Villager of the Year” award is determined by community nominations and the Chamber’s votes. The Chamber looks for someone “whose noteworthy good deeds has served to preserve the uniqueness of our community or improved those areas that need improvement.”

It was touching when Shelli-Anne’s name was announced – our own brief interactions with her this year have been genuine and heartfelt. She truly deserved the award!

Because many, many individuals in Atwater Village contribute to the positive development of the community, the honorable mentions were not forgotten. Atwater Elementary Principal Charles Smith has improved student scores tremendously, and has been a staple in the community. Sandra Caravella is a founding member of the Friends of Atwater Village, and a long-time resident of the neighborhood.

Ventura Sons & Masonry hosted the Mixer

Family-run  business Ventura Sons & Masonry (Alex Ventura and wife wife Andy) hosted the event in their back yard, and along with a delicious spread of food the local brewery, Golden Road Brewing, provided libations.

Congratulations to Shelli-Anne, and to Atwater Village for having so many great volunteers!

Scottish-themed gastropub replacing Kama Sushi in Atwater Village

Kama Sushi shut its doors in the last couple of months, likely because it wasn’t exactly a Yelpers dream sushi spot. The closure and recent construction spurred a flurry of rumors about what would replace it, but now we can put those rumors to rest.

Behind the new restaurant are Marc Kreiner, Charles Lew, and Alex Kagianaris of the popular burger and beer restaurant Stout. Lew was inspired by his Scottish heritage, thus was born the Scotch-centric gastropub they are calling The Morrison.

“I wanted to do a restaurant that would pay homage to Scotland and show my appreciation for the time I spent growing up there and the people including my mother Agnes Morrison who make the country so special. It’s a culture very rich in tradition and possessing of some incredible culinary fare. Look for a modern interpretation of some true Highland kitchen favorites in an atmosphere that tastefully blends tradition with modern day comforts,” said Lew in an email.

Spacecraft is behind the new design, which is described as a “modern minimalist interpretation” (see the renderings below). Like most new restaurants, no word on an opening date, but we’ll keep on it!

Golden Road hosting pub crawl in Atwater Village on Friday

The Golden Road Brewing team of beer lovers are, following a great Echo Park crawl, bringing the pub crawl to Atwater Village this Friday night.

The Atwater Village Chamber of Commerce is hosting a “Summer Shindig & Business Mixer” at Ventura & Son Masonry in North Atwater Village. Mark your calendars – this is happening tomorrow night!

In addition to swapping business cards with local business people, Golden Road Brewing will be providing libations. The Chamber will also announce this year’s Atwater Villager of the Year award to a noteworthy village “whose good deeds has severed to preserve the uniqueness of our community or improved those areas that need improvement.”

Atwater Village’s Bon Vivant Market soft opening tomorrow

We’ve been eying and anxiously awaiting the opening of yet another new place to stuff our faces (and, why not, get a little tipsy) in Atwater Village – Bon Vivant Market. At first we kind of envisioned it like a mini Whole Foods – a salad and sandwich bar, other freshly prepared foods, maybe an occasional wine tasting, that sort of thing. But it’s actually a little bit more than that, which everyone will get a first-hand look at tomorrow for the market’s soft opening starting at 11:00 am.

Before we go into the details, open up your iTunes and put on a little Francoise Hardy to set the mood. The important thing to think about is it’s not exactly like a grocery store market (but don’t nix the Whole Foods/Mother’s Market comparison completely). It’s more like an indoor market, slash cafe, slash bar, slash restaurant.

There are no signs of the Jubilee Adult Daycare Center, which shut down last year.All the storefront doors are open to the Glendale Boulevard sidewalk, through which you can walk in and have your choice of (starting from the right side of the building) charcuterie and sandwiches in the savory section, desserts and pastries in the sweets section, coffee and tea, and/or anything from the full bar (including 16 wine taps). The ideas is that you order from any station, get your number, and have a seat at the large communal tables or cafe tables at the front.

In the kitchen is Chef “Bloody” Bill Annesely, but don’t let the name scare you off – there will be plenty of vegan and vegetarian options available. Lunch will be more along the lines of the small bites, meats, sausages, and so forth. Dinner will be a little more upscale and may include a cocktail server or two to help get those drink orders of yours in.

Owner Tricia LaBelle emailed some more details about what to expect:

We will be featuring fresh veggie salads, cous cous dishes,Ggreek yogurt and home made granolas, incredible waffles and crepes for both sweet and savor palates.  Fresh made soups and sandwiches as well as a featured carving station for our meat lovers.  Extensive line of fromage and charcuterie and luxury Chocolates.  Alain Milliat and Valerie Kelly Jams and Nectars, Oliana Oils and Balsamics, A L’Olivier dressings…. just to name a few of our favorites!  Our Wine menu is designed by TIXA and our bar will feature delicious fruity and savory martinis, champagnes and fine cognacs.  Ice Teas from Calistoga as well as fresh made lemonades, sodas and juices.

Now that all the permits and parking issues have been sorted out with the city, the soft opening starts tomorrow (Friday, June 29) at 11:00 am. A grand opening is expected in September.
