Scottish-themed gastropub replacing Kama Sushi in Atwater Village

Kama Sushi shut its doors in the last couple of months, likely because it wasn’t exactly a Yelpers dream sushi spot. The closure and recent construction spurred a flurry of rumors about what would replace it, but now we can put those rumors to rest.

Behind the new restaurant are Marc Kreiner, Charles Lew, and Alex Kagianaris of the popular burger and beer restaurant Stout. Lew was inspired by his Scottish heritage, thus was born the Scotch-centric gastropub they are calling The Morrison.

“I wanted to do a restaurant that would pay homage to Scotland and show my appreciation for the time I spent growing up there and the people including my mother Agnes Morrison who make the country so special. It’s a culture very rich in tradition and possessing of some incredible culinary fare. Look for a modern interpretation of some true Highland kitchen favorites in an atmosphere that tastefully blends tradition with modern day comforts,” said Lew in an email.

Spacecraft is behind the new design, which is described as a “modern minimalist interpretation” (see the renderings below). Like most new restaurants, no word on an opening date, but we’ll keep on it!

Coming soon to Atwater Village: Bon Vivant Market

As the lunch hour approached today, I was wishing there was a quick place in Atwater Village near the office that would satisfy a very specific craving – a light, fresh, and simple salad of some kind, something that wouldn’t carbo-load me and send me into a 2:00 desk-napping session.

While Hugo’s and other local quick lunch spots will satisfy me for now, we are really looking forward to the opening for a new market in Atwater Village – Bon Vivant Market, taking over the former Adult Jubilee Day Care Center on Glendale Boulevard. Owner Tricia La Bell is a resident of Los Feliz and has spent a lot of time in Atwater over the years, which is why they wanted to open up in this neighborhood.

The new market, hopefully opening this fall, promises to curb my craving for easy, freshly prepared food like soups, paninis, roasts, pasta and organic green salads. Other grab-able items include a savory and sweets counter, pre-packaged light bites, gourmet coffee and other beverages. In addition, there will be a charcuterie and fine cheese station just off the wine and beer bar – that’s right, a wine and beer bar! Everything they’ll carry will have a focus on local and California foods and products, along with a variety of vegan and gluten-free products. The Atwater Village News website says epicurean treats from Dean & DeLuca have already been delivered.

Okay, we might be over-selling it to you but we’re really looking forward to checking this place out when it opens this fall. Tricia told us in an email about the new market:

We are a community driven design indeed. As as a Los Feliz resident and a lover food my goal is to bring to the Atwater, Silverlake, Los Feliz and Glendale area products we all love from near and afar… even childhood memories such as crocks of mac n’ cheese, flaky french toast, strawberry shortcake, delicious summer salads and home baked breads.

Yumm!

Bon Vivant Market won’t be the only one opening up on the block – Atwater Village Farm is a farm-to-table market concept, coming hopefully in October, on the opposite side of the street at the corner of Larga (read about it here). Though they probably won’t be exactly direct competitors, there will be lots of great healthy food shopping options in Atwater Village in the coming months!

Bon Vivant Market will possibly be open daily from 8:00 am until 10:00 pm weekdays, and midnight on the weekends.

They ask that you give them some feedback about what to carry on their new Facebook page.

Proof Bakery takes over Tony’s in Atwater Village

The Former Tony's Bakery gets a facelift

Tony’s Rolling Pin Bakery closed up shop not too long ago, and it looks like the space on 3156 Glendale Blvd. in Atwater Village already has a new tenant.

Proof Bakery is rumored to be opening up this week – we first heard it was supposed to be on Tuesday, but a quick run to check it out yesterday told me they’d be holding off for a few more days (see photo above). Apparently barista Yeekai Lim will be brewing your espresso at Proof, along with owner Na Young Ma and baker Crystal White.

You’ll be able to get a delicious cup of coffee and hopefully some baked goodies during their newly scheduled soft opening on Friday starting at 8:00 am.
