Atwater Village Internet and Cable Service

Atwater Village has internet and cable service from all the major companies in central LA: Spectrum for cable, and AT&T for fiber internet and phone service. There are also some smaller internet companies in the area such as Sonic and Starry Internet, which is a new wireless company. neither of the smaller companies has TV service, but they have cheap pricing compared with Spectrum and AT&T.

  • Spectrum: cable and internet service (sports options)
  • AT&T: internet and digital TV service (sports options)
  • Sonic: internet, no TV service (no sports options)
  • Starry Internet: wireless internet, no TV service (no sports options)

Spectrum cable packages

Spectrum has three internet packages in LA (prices are per month):

  • Spectrum Basic: 200Mb internet for $49.99
  • Spectrum Ultra: 400Mb internet for $69.99
  • Spectrum Gig: 940Mb internet for $109.99

They also have TV packages with sports and family channels.

Spectrum cable really is best if you’re a sports fan. Otherwise, the channels and shows are all cheaper from Netflix and HBO directly, which you can get without buying TV. If you’re a sports fan though, you basically have to get Spectrum. There’s no other way to watch local sports, and it’s cheaper than paying for national sports network access one by one online.

Spectrum price changes in Atwater Village

I have Spectrum personally, and my price has gone up several times over the years. They currently charge me $69.99 for internet service, and a $10 extra fee for WiFi.

I did some digging into why this is, and it looks like Spectrum has been slowly raising the prices since they bought out Time Warner Cable in the area some time ago. I originally signed up for internet service with Time Warner when I moved here back in 2011, and was paying $80 for a TV and internet package. I dropped TV in 2013 and after some haggling with them, got the price down to $45 per month.

When Spectrum took over, it was pretty confusing and they raised my rate again immediately to more than $60 every month. However, the speed did increase from 100 to 200 Mb in 2018, so the service is supposedly somewhat improved now.

AT&T internet and TV prices in Atwater

Spectrum and AT&T are the only two internet companies around Atwater currently. If you’re only getting internet service, the prices are basically the same: around $60 per month for basic internet.

The promos and coupons change from year to year, but the prices don’t seem to be getting better.

You can compare Spectrum with AT&T by checking plans on AT&T’s website. They have TV options as well. But they are much more expensive and have fewer sports. Like I said earlier, that’s the only reason to buy TV in Atwater Village thanks to Netflix and HBO.
